for me it comes in waves. sometimes i read and post here every day. sometimes i just read. other times i nearly forget it's there and don't visit for a month or two, or i'm too busy with other things. then suddenly i'll get right back into it for the next month. odd.

Is it normal to spend so much time here?
by burnedout ini am fairly new to taking a stand on what i have long felt about the org.
no longer an elder now (big weight off my shoulders), and really find i am researching on this board all kinds of things i suspected and are now confirmed.
looking back over the years i had many intuitions about some situations and never took action on those feelings.

TIKKUN OLAM, Repairing the World
by designs inone of the things i think i missed most in the decades i was a jw was not being involved in what judaism calls tikkun olam or repairing the world.
the most basic of things humans can do for each other and for this earth.
we see needs and problems and we should respond- hunger, poverty, the environment whatever the need we as humans are called on by our humanity to fill.

yeah, jw's don't engage in any humanitarian help other than for the aid in reconstruction of their own kingdom halls. they feel the best help they can offer anyone else is the "life saving" preaching work. there are rare instances where they offered help to the general population, but then the emphasis is completely on "giving a fine witness"

by God_Delusion inhi guy's and gal's,.
the jwb crew is pleased to announce that we have been awarded a grant by the cyprus film and arts academy to create a short film based on on the diary of an armageddon survivor - http://www.jehovahswitnessblog.com/2010/01/diary-of-armageddon-survivor.html.
the grant is small (around $16,000), but includes the leasing of 4 very good cameras, lighting and sound equipment.

But, most witnesses i know would steer clear of "a movie about a witness girl" if it's from a worldly source, knowing that it will most likely cast witnesses in a negative light...

BTTT - hopefully people look in "active topics"
Well done. Now I have to figure out how to get my kids to watch this.
i just watched this for the first time, loved it. but that's the thing, even though it's very level and realistic and not apostatey or specifically witness-bashing... how do you get a witness to watch a movie thats "about a witness girl who gets disfellowshipped"?

by losthobbit inhow does one know that what one believes is the truth?.
i grew up going to church every sunday, being constantly reminded that if i do not believe the "holy" bible i will be tortured in hell eternally.. .

Jehovah's witnesses and control, what are your thoughts ?
by recovering inas i reflect on my life as a jw i remember how the religion attempts to control so many aspects of your life.
i decided to make a list with examples of the mind numbing number of things that they feel they have the right to control in members lives.. 1 what and how much education its members are entitled to pursue.
the witnesses look down on formal secondary education.

"large but mainstream" brings what changes next?
by agent zero inin some other threads there has been talk of wether the organization will go large and mainstream or small and hard-core in the upcoming years.. in the past few years, the sunday public talk has been shortened, the bookstudy eliminated (at least as a seperate meeting night), #2 talks are down to a simple read-through, and a little longer ago pioneering hour requirements have been shortened.
personally i would take these as signs of them going more soft and keeping a larger membership.. if this is indeed the case, what would you suspect of being cut off or changed next?.

oh sorry, i'm just guessing based on this April and the apparent "success" it had.
